Feathers on the beech

Here’s another attempt at turning a crotch. Hopefully, this is more successful than the oak from a few weeks ago.

The first one is the smaller of the two (on the right). I was trying to get the feather (the orange streak) into the bowl, so I didn’t use the entire half of the log section

Once I got the outside round, I realized that I had given myself a tough piece of wood to make something out of. Quite a difference in thicknesses. But I did manage to find a bowl (or very small platter) in there, AND kept the feather there. It doesn’t look like that much, but I’m hoping that once it is finished, sanded and oiled, it will look more dramatic.

On to the second half. This one I left as big as possible, which puts the feather on the rim. So I made sure to have a wide rim in order to keep as much of the feather as possible. On the back side, you can see the feathering better.

Like previous bowls, they aren’t that big. I’m still focusing on the “how” of all this and don’t want to get too bogged down in turning a single large item. I’m also thinking that the smaller items will be dry and ready for me to finish sooner.
